The Delta State Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Theresa Obiajulu Diai will on Monday, January 17, 2022 commence inspection of custodial centres of the Nigerian Correctional Service in the State.
According to a statement by the Functioning Director of Protocol/Public Relations, High Court of Justice, Asaba, Mr. Agbaragu Timothy, the Chief Judge will begin the visit with the Warri custodial centre (popularly known as Okere prison) on Monday 17th to Wednesday, January 19th, 2022. While that of Sapele Custodial Centre and Remand Home will be on 20th of January, 2022.
Similarly, Justice Theresa Diai will be at Kwale Custodial Centre on Monday, January 24th, while Agbor Centre is scheduled for Thursday, January 25th, 2022.
The Chief Judge will round off the inspection at Ogwashi-Uku Custodial Centre on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th of January, 2022.
The exercise shall commence at 10 a.m each day.
It requested custodial centres in the State to forward the list of awaiting trials to the office of the Chief Registrar, High Court of Justice, Asaba; Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Ministry of Justice, Asaba and Commissioner of Police, Police Headquarters, Asaba.
The statement further directed registrars and their subordinates in charge of stations in the open courts to ensure that records namely: charge sheets, case files containing information, record books and other relevant documents are uploaded and ready for presentation to facilitate His Lordship's visit.
Director of Public Prosecution is enjoined to get ready all cases for filing and/or where legal opinion (s) have been rendered, are authenticated and duly tendered during the exercise.
The statement requested the Commissioner of Police and his desk officers, including prosecutors in the Magistrate and Area Customary courts to provide records of case files placed before Learned magistrates and chairmen of Area Customary courts in line with Section 293 (1) and (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Delta State of Nigeria 2016.
It therefore enjoined legal practitioners, security agencies and other stakeholders in the administration of criminal justice in the State to cooperate and prepare for the successful visit of the Chief Judge to the Custodial Centres.
