It has been an interesting week for us at the @NigBarAssoc in general and for me in particular, as we continue to make further giant strides in our quest to make the Bar truly work for all. On Monday, 24th January 2022, I visited the National Assembly at the instance of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, where two significant events took place.
Firstly, we formalised the cordial working relationship between the @NigBarAssoc and the House of Representatives by signing a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) to further our objective of contributing to law reforms in Nigeria.
As the Honourable Speaker rightly noted, the signing of the MoC was merely symbolic and is illustrative of the collaboration which the @NigBarAssoc and the House of Representatives have been enjoying under our respective administrations.
Under my leadership, the NBA has enjoyed a very close working relationship with the House of Representatives, the highpoint of which was made manifest in October 2020 during the END SARS protests, when we worked together to rework the legislative framework for policing in Nigeria, culminating in the Police Service Commission Bill 2020.
Secondly, we took the possession of the NBA liaison office at the National Assembly which the Honorable Speaker promised us and which he has now fulfilled. We thank the Honourable Speaker for providing office space for the NBA to serve as a liaison office to further this objective of the newly signed Memorandum.
On the same Monday, 24th January 2022, I formally inaugurated the ECNBA led by Mr. Ayotunde Akintunde, SAN to organize the 2022 national election of the @NigBarAssoc.
I have been consistent in my messaging on the need for the @NigBarAssoc to conduct free and fair, and rancour free election. I said so in my Manifesto and I said so again yesterday.
As Nigeria’s foremost professional Association, our electoral process ought to be the standard for others to follow and should, to the extent humanly possible, be devoid of the glitches that we have witnessed in recent elections.
As I did during the fourth quarterly meeting of the NBA-NEC in Abeokuta, Ogun State in December 2021, I once again pledge to provide all candidates at the 2022 elections a level playing field and provide the ECNBA with all the support they need to organize the freest and most credible NBA election in recent memory.
