ON THIS AUSPICIOUS OCCASION OF THE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN DAY, I SUPPORT THE 35% AFFIRMATIVE ACTION FOR OUR WOMEN. | EWENODE O. WILLIAM ESQ.

I join all well-meaning men and women across Nigeria to wish all our women folks happy International Women's Day.

I consider a time such as this as another opportunity to stand in support of our women.

Women are the best creature from God to man. They are our mothers, wives, sisters, colleagues, and friends.

Women are gifted by God to proffer solutions to a man's world. This is why no man is totally complete without a woman.

Most Nigerian women are highly industrious and great homemakers.

Though women in Nigeria are in greater majority than men, they have nevertheless been cheated and deprived of some basic rights that should have naturally enured to them.

This is why I feel pain that the Nigerian National Assembly rejected some brilliant Bills that would have advanced the cause of women in Nigeria.

It is recalled that the National Assembly recently rejected some Bills that were meant to uplift the parlous state of affairs of the Nigerian woman. Some of these Bills are:

Bill No. 35 being a Bill for an Act to provide for special Seats for women in National And State Houses of Assembly.

Bill No. 36 being a Bill for an Act to expound the Scope of Citizenship by registration.

Bill No. 37 was a Bill for an Act to provide for Affirmative Action in Political Party Administration.

Bill No. 38 was a Bill for an Act to provide criteria for qualifications to becoming an indigene of a State in Nigeria.

But for the rejection of these Bills, the passing into Law of the abovementioned Bills would have added colour to today's celebrations.

I'm nonetheless not deterred that there is light at the end of the tunnel and our women should not despair as the Bills can still be passed into Law.

I, therefore, congratulate my wife, my mother, my sisters, my female friends, and colleagues on this special occasion of International Women's Day and wish all women of goodwill a most exciting and blessed celebration.
