NBA STATEMENT ON THE PROPOSED LEGAL PRACTITIONERS ACT (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2022.

 

Dear Colleagues,

As you may be aware, there have been controversial efforts to amend the extant Legal Practitioners Act to, inter alia, overly extend the powers of the Body of Benchers (BoB) and also install the BoB as the regulator of the legal profession in Nigeria.

On the 18th day of March 2022, the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA-NEC) rejected the proposed amendments, which seek to whittle down the powers of the NBA, and called for a harmonisation of the different positions before the forwarding of the Bill with the input of the NBA. 

Kindly find attached the statement of the NBA on the proposed amendments of the Legal Practitioners Act, requesting the new leadership of the Body of Benchers to assist in resolving the persistent imbroglio.
