SOCIALIST EQUALITY MOVEMENT SUPPORTS NLC'S INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION FROM WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7, 2023
FORM RANK AND FILE COMMITTEES OF ACTION IN COMMUNITIES, CAMPUSES AND CLUSTER OF WORKPLACES!
FIGHT FOR A WORKING PEOPLE'S GOVERNMENT!!
The Socialist Equality Movement welcomes the decision of the National Executive Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress declaring an indefinite strike action from Wednesday, 7th June, 2023 against the astronomical increase in fuel prices.
The NLC NEC resolution demanded "reversal to the old fuel price". On its part, the TUC NEC stated that " it would await the outcome of the Sunday, June 4, 2023 meeting with President Tinubu".
By declaring an indefinite general strike , the NLC has escalated pressure not only on the Tinubu regime but also on itself. The NLC bureaucracy is reputed for calling off general strikes at shortest notice to commencement of the general strike. It has to prove that it is really ready for the battle this time around.
The TUC bureaucracy on its part has put its fate on the outcome of the Sunday, June 4, 2023 meeting. By calling a meeting with the two labour centres on Sunday, June 4, 2023 , the Tinubu regime has resolved to wear out their leaderships with long negotiation meetings.
An indefinite general strike is not a tea party, all sectors of the economy will be shutdown. It inadvertently places power on the streets.
With a regime that is less than two weeks old, the Tinubu regime will want to ensure that such an indefinite general strike does not hold. It is a completely unpredictable political situation-there can be a popular revolution or a military coup de'tat.
For us in the Socialist Equality Movement, we are of the view that rank and file committees need to be formed in the communities, campuses and cluster of workplaces -both formal and informal rank and file working class people.
It is such democratic and popular organs of the working people that can hold the central labour bureaucracy to task to go ahead with the indefinite General strike.
The rank and file committees of action must be prepared to fight for a revolutionary working people's government that places commanding heights of the economy to galvanise the resources of society to meet the needs of all.
