The DSN volunteers in attendance namely:
1. Mr. Olasunkanmi Ogunniran Esq. - DSN Coordinator, Ogun State.
2. Mr. Ekainu Gabriel Esq.
3. Mr. Kehinde Yekinni Esq.
4. Mrs. Morolake Owoseni Esq.
The team visited Adatan Police Station/Area Commander, Abeokuta.
The DSN team was warmly received by the Area Commander himself who instructed the DPO, CSP Sikiru Olugbenga, to take us to the detention facility. Further instruction from the DPO to one ASP Aliu Suraj who took us to the cell facility for inspection.
At the time of the DSN team inspection of the detention/cell facility, five (5) suspects were in detention namely:
1. Jamiu Ogunbiyi (M); was arrested on 10/01/2024. Offence - Stealing.
2. Samson Marade (M) 16yrs; was arrested on 10/01/2024. Offence - Stealing.
3. Adesola Feyi (M) 25 years; was arrested on 10/01/2024. Offence - Stealing.
4. Shuaib Ehingitola (M); was arrested on 11/01/2024. Offence - Stealing.
5. Oladapo Muhammad (M); was arrested on 12/01/2024. Offence - Obtaining under false pretence.
The DSN team observed that virtually all the suspects had their families on ground and the matters were being settled to effect their release. We further observed the detention of a minor, one Samson Marade (16yrs), for stealing (some bananas). The said offence was committed with an adult, Adesola Feyi (25yrs). ASP Aliu Suraj who led us on the inspection informed us that the family of the minor and the community the offence was committed were coming to see that the matter be resolved.
Another suspect named Oladapo Muhammad upon interview, it was discovered that he was detained for a purely civil matter. Further enquries led us to the office of the IPO, DSP Sunday Eyigbejale. He informed us of the nature of the transaction that could connote criminal intent and that investigation was ongoing in the matter. He stated that there was going to be an amicable settlement of the matter. At the time of the visit, no suspect in the female cell.
All the suspects in the cell were visibly written on the Police Station Board with the details of the offence committed as seen at the counter of the police station.
Observation:
The cell facility was not in good hygiene condition. It was smelling and not properly kept.
We observed that the officers were willing and ready to relate with our team and were of great cooperation.
