THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION SHOULD BENEFIT THE JUDICIARY.

By Bayo Akinlade Esq.

When Bayo Akinlade advocated that NBA should use its resources to support the judiciary, only a few people understood his point.

NBA Branches like Warri Branch have in the past supported their judiciary by providing palliatives in terms of infrastructure and other benefits.

In fact, a few NBA Branches and individual lawyers have been known to support the Judiciary over the years not only intellectually but also in terms of infrastructure and others.

*THE IRONY*
Many senior lawyers, especially SANs send personal gifts to Judges and magistrates. Growing up in this profession I have seen gifts sent to the judiciary at festive seasons. I have even heard of lawyers paying the school fees of children of judges both home and abroad.

If private lawyers can do this, why is it difficult for NBA as an association to come to terms with having a structured intervention for the judiciary.

*NBA CONSTITUTION*

THE judiciary has as much stake in the NBA as other lawyers.

The first object of NBA is to protect the integrity of the judiciary.

The judges and magistrates are associate "MEMBERS" under the constitution

If the constitution identifies these category as members then are they not entitled to the NBA welfare system?

*The NBA Ikorodu Model*
The judges and magistrates in Ikorodu are part of everything we do.

We ensure they are comfortable because if they are not comfortable, how can our members benefit from justice?

When people ask "is it the NBAs job to support the judiciary"? I tell them to look at the NBA constitution and tell me where it says NBA shouldn't support the only arm of government led and managed by one profession [the legal profession]

If magistrates and judges are members of NBA, why is their welfare being neglected by the NBA?

In Ikorodu, we care about our judiciary and I aim to take this message nationally with examples from other Branches like the NBA Warri Branch, we can do more as a collective than the *individual gifts* which tend towards personal gain and corruption.

WHAT IS WRONG IN ENSURING THAT OUR JUDICIARY IS THE BEACON OF HOPE FOR ALL CITIZENS?

WHAT IS WRONG IN NBA USING ITS FUNDS TO SUPPORT THE GOVERNMENT IN PROVIDING BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE JUSTICE SYSTEM?

WHY SHOULD OUR COURT ROOMS LOOK LIKE A MARKET PLACE?

WHY SHOULD COURT BUILDINGS NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT RESTROOMS FOR COURT USERS?

ALL NBA BRANCHES MUST RISE UP..... SUPPORT YOUR JUDICIARY TODAY, PROTECT YOUR PROFESSION, PROTECT YOUR MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD!
