AN EPOCH MAKING
INITIATIVE UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF PUSAN FOR YOUNG LAWYERS RANGING FROM
1-7 YEARS, WITH RESPECT TO THE TIMEOUS GRANT OF A 1 YEAR FREE ACCESS
SUBSCRIPTION TO THE LAW PAVILION ELECTRONIC LAW REPORTS.

An
Appreciation To The NBA President Paul Usoro San by Olajide Abiodun Esq.
As
Paliwala puts it, ‘…The development of the global legal practice means that
lawyers need to be globally aware in ways which are beyond the limits of
traditional law libraries and books.’ As new areas of law continue to
spring up, it necessitates a shift from the old ways in order to provide
solution to the new issues that arise in these areas. Only an informed lawyer
can do this and IT offers a whole lot of information. Therefore, lawyers cannot
continue to deny the relevance of IT especially where they live in a society
propelled by technology. The yardstick for determining a well completed legal
education and also a successful lawyer lies in how well he/she has been able to
apply his legal education in addressing individual/societal problems. Lawyers
must now take the pains of understanding IT and applying it lest they find
themselves incompetent in face of situations such as the present closure of
businesses, as is the new normal.
The
administration of the Nigerian Bar Association have been faced with so many
challenges, ranging from structural management and grass root development. The PUSAN
led team have done and still doing a great job as it concerns lawyers and the
legal profession as a whole. You will agree with me that Rome wasn’t built in a
day, so it applies to any meaningful change and or growth in the system. Where
we have a very faulty foundation, the whole building (human investment/legal
profession in this context) will crumble. It is not enough to always clamour
for financial welfare, which is what has always been the first thought of a
young lawyer. The basic and most important thing to be concerned with is self
development or capacity building.
Lawyers,
especially the young ones must learn to be creative and ready to work hard
without expecting a big reward instantly. It is the sweat and handwork a lawyer
puts into himself that yields the result and or opportunities the society
demands and yearn for.
There
is no greater offer, than what the NBA has just done. And I say a very big THANK
YOU to the NBA ably led by Paul Usoro San (even though I
am no more a young lawyer, but I have been there). Palliative in cash wont
last for a year. Same wont provide you with the requisite development and or capacity
needed to excel as a lawyer, even though the palliative might seem a privilege
you are entitled to as member of the noble profession / association in this
times. But to be frank, this grant and or offer to the young lawyers, if well
utilized by the young wigs, will not only afford them a better living, but also
enlarge their broad knowledge to the practice of law.
A
lawyer who is privileged to have this offer has just won a jackpot worth more
than cash gifts. Also, for those who already have it, and thinks it is of no
use, should not be quick to condemn the initiative. Your condition is another
individual’s prayer. Utilize every opportunity, good or bad for a better and
excellent bar.
Conclusively,
permit me to leave with this parting words; Only an innovative lawyer can
survive tomorrow's legal practice.
