NBA IKORODU: WE MUST UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF OUR 'YES', BUT EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY IS THE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW POWERFUL OUR 'NO' IS!-THE FAREWELL SPEECH OF THE IMMEDIATE PAST YLF CHAIRPERSON IN GOLD.

CHAIRPERSON’S FAREWELL SPEECH

It is with great delight that I welcome my distinguished colleagues and ex-officio members to the last meeting of the current administration today the15th day of June, 2020.

I appreciate the immediate past executives especially the Chairman Mr. Adebayo Akinlade for his tremendous support towards professional growth of members of the forum. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to prove ourselves.  I acknowledge all our Consultants, my Predecessors and Ex-officio members especially O.S Aromolaran, Olajide Abiodun and Khadijah Abolanle Thany-Bello for your worthy advice and support. I also wish to appreciate YLF liaising/ supervising executive Oluwaseun Aka for always coming to our aid.
We extend our appreciation to members of the forum and the branch for your support always. Thank you for contributing to our success.

Today is not the day for long speeches so I’ll keep it very short but I’ll like to remind you of few things.
This journey began about 8 years ago when the leadership of the branch decided to give the Young Lawyers a voice, an opportunity to look inwards and take necessary steps that advances their collective interest.  This birthed the young Lawyers Forum in the branch and since then its leaders have strived to give the forum a voice. About two years ago, it was our turn and I believe we made the most of it.
The vision of this administration as stated in my inaugural address is to cater for the professional and ethical progress of young Lawyers in the branch through partnerships with stakeholders within and outside this noble profession, while also positioning ourselves as the thought leaders and being socially responsible.
All of our initiatives were woven around this. Kindly find attached our account of stewardship.
I must be sincere that the task wasn’t an easy one but it was worth the effort knowing that we are better than we were. We achieved this in unity of purpose.
On this note, I’ll remind you all of the need to continue as one regardless of the obstacles and challenges.
The challenges & responsibilities though staunch will not stifle our collective efforts. We are all aware of the charismatic power of words but what I cherish more is the fervency of action, and we as young Lawyers haven’t done enough yet. There is so much more to be done so I’ll encourage everyone as young leaders to take the initiative and let the forum, the legal profession and your community feel your impact.

It is imperative to state that we as young lawyers must understand the weight of the responsibility on us and strive to be active, to see the need and take the lead in our personal engagements, legal profession and more importantly, for the betterment of our Nation. We can achieve anything if we set our mind on it.
As young Lawyers, we must understand the power of our YES but even more importantly is the understanding of how ground breaking and system shaking our NO is because our No is active and productive. Because our No doesn’t just sit still saying it’s okay, let’s leave it to the government to fix things. Because our No is to be discontent with the current state of things within the legal profession and seek its improvement. Be the change you want to see.
Our YES is to choose to work with and not against each other, our Yes is to understand the responsibility to advocate for causes that are bigger than us so let’s volunteer.
I encourage our successors and all young Lawyers to strive to raise the standard and project the branch positively. Endeavour to cooperate with the newly elected Executives ably led by Mr. Abimbola Ojedokun who have also pledged his support to the forum. I also pledge my unwavering support to the course of the forum as I wish everyone the best in their endeavors. Remember that with God you can achieve so much more.
Finally, I return the Glory to God Almighty for making all things possible.

Thank you.
