PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SOLIDARITY WITH ONGOING NATIONWIDE STRIKE ACTION OF NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RESIDENT DOCTORS.

I write to express solidarity with the ongoing nationwide strike of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) which commences today, 1st April, 2021.

I call on President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngigir to meet the demands of the striking doctors forthwith.

The demands of the Nationwide strike includes payment of salaries of some house officers, recruitment of more house officers, abolishment of the bench fees for doctors undergoing training in other hospitals, payment of National Minimum Wage for Resident Doctors and hazard allowances occasioned by the COVID-19 and Lassa Fever pandemic.

I view the ongoing nationwide strike which coincides with the trip of President Muhammadu Buhari for medical treatment as a revelation of the height of insensitivity of the regime.

I am of the respectful view that the rot in the healthsector is a direct result of the underfunding of the sector. For instance, the budgetary allocation for the health sector in the 2018 budget was slashed.

I call for increase in budgetary allocation to the health sector and for the President Muhammadu Buhari-led regime to meet the demands of the striking doctors.
