Let me start by first mentioning that the year 2023 is a Landmark year in Nigeria.
It is a year where the President and almost all the State Governors across Nigeria may be leaving office having completed their second tenure in office. It will indeed be a year that will be most interesting to watch out for.
Like 2015, the year 2023 is the year where many of those in power will struggle to retain power for their political parties as well as attempt to influence the election of their chosen/adopted candidates to replace them. The permutations and the stakes are very high as it will be a year of VERY High Wire politicking since politicians will attempt to outdo and undo themselves in the political chess game.
As a matter of fact, the real politicking and the serious political manoeuvering will actually start in the year 2022 which is a few months away.
THE PLACE OF THE NIGERIAN ELECTORATES.
In all of the above political manoeuverings, the Nigerian electorates are the greatest casualties. The electorate take up the very herculean task of leaving his house early in the morning to the Polling/Voting Center, he gets accredited and wait under the scorching sun for hours for Election Materials and he may eventually cast his vote later in the evening.
After voting, he may still be patient enough to await the last person to vote and then see to the counting of the ballot papers in his presence. He then eventually leave the Polling/voting Center fulfilled that he witnessed the entire process and if his candidate was the one that won that Polling Unit, his day was made.
The electorate then gets to his house and continue till mid night to follow up and await the final announcement of the entire results from the different Local Government Areas, if it is the Gubernatorial election and the votes from the thirty six States in the country, if it is the Presidential election.
After going through this harrowing experience, the electorate is disillusioned to find that one year, two years and even after two years of office of the Politician, nothing serious is on the ground as achievements but only media propaganda.
It is even more precarious for the electorate that the Candidate he supported having won the election and now in power, turn around to promote anti citizen's policies, increase tax, ensure that the roads are in worse and terrible state than he met them, he allows crime and hunger to ravage the same electorates that voted them in office.
WHERE THE ELECTORATES MISSED IT.
The electorates in Nigeria have always missed the golden opportunity they had to be king when they chose to dance to primordial considerations of religious and political party lines instead of activating the Merit lines.
Is it not sad that the same electorates that are crying and wailing their misfortune today were the same persons who went out to cast their votes for these same politicians?
Take a look at the various Local Government Areas, the States and the Federal Government today, is this the best that Nigeria can get in terms of leadership?
GOING FORWARD
It is my candid position that the Nigerian electorates have a chance once again to assert their position by engaging the politicians and ensuring that only the candidates with the requisite experience and exposure for any office must be voted whether or not the candidate have the money to throw about.
Until the Nigerian electorates realizes this and take up this responsibility, the suffering continues, but God forbid, we must change the narrative as a people to vote in 2023 elections the right candidates based mainly on merit and capacity and not on primordial considerations.
