Members of the legal community, academia, and the bench thronged the Oleh High Court today at Oleh in Isoko South Local Government Area to pay their last respect to the late Professor David Folorunsho Tom of the Delta State University amid encomiums.
Late Professor D. F. Tom passed away on October 5th 2022, at the age of 68 years.
In a special valedictory court session held in his honour, the Chief Judge of Delta State, Honourable Justice Tessy Diai described the late erudite scholar who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1995, as a distinguished and accomplished legal practitioner and academician.
Justice Diai who was represented by Honourable Justice Emifoniye Cletus asserted that the late law lecturer left inedible marks in the sands of time, having established firm legacies of dedication through dint of hard work.
"His legacies are firmly established in hard work, dedication to duty, profound love for his family, companionship to his colleagues and friends, attributes that he was well-known for. He left fond memories and that will be hard to erase," Justice Diai eulogised.
She implored his family members and everyone deeply affected by his death to take solace in the worthy life he lived and the enviable achievements he made while on earth.
In retrospect, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Isaiah Bozimor, Esq. noted that the quintessential lecturer personally affected his life and family as a mentor.
The AG who was represented by the Ozoro zonal head of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Oyin-Tarilahyefa Suowari said that the late Professor Tom would be missed by the Delta State University, Niger Delta University, and the law profession.
Speaking on behalf of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), Professor Festus Emiri, SAN, described Professor Tom as a person who left a mantra of using his time on earth to leave a mark, have impacted on the lives of many persons of different walks of life.
In his eulogy, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Oleh Branch, Mr. John Urete asserted that late Professor Tom's amiable and convivial disposition with the people and environment of Isoko nation earned him rare appointments which, included chairman of the Clean Environmental Sanitation Competition set up by Isoko South Local Government Council and chairman, Committee on Peace and Reconciliation of Uzere Intra-Community Disturbances/Crisis in 2012 which, finally, returned peace to the community.
Mr. Urete urged those still alive to admonish selves and to have sober reflection so as to mend deficiencies before departing the earth.
As the first Ph.D. student in Law at Oleh Campus who joined DELSU in 1995, the late Professor David Folorunsho Tom held many academic positions in the University including pioneer coordinator of Diploma in Law; Dean Faculty of Law; Associate Dean of Postgraduate School, and Director of Academic Planning. He delivered his Inaugural Lecture in 2019.
The Dean Faculty of Law, Oleh Campus Delta State University, Abraka Dr. Ufuoma Awhefeada, lecturers, members of the legal profession, past and present chairmen of the Nigerian Bar Association, and law students of DELSU were among the sympathisers who were present at the valedictory court session.
