COMMON MYTHS ABOUT EVERYDAY CARCINOGENS AND DIET: AN EVIDENCE-BASED PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDE

Cancer is not caused by one food, one household product, or a single personal choice. It develops through a complex interaction of age, inherited susceptibility, infections, environmental exposures, lifestyle factors, and random genetic changes in cells. Nevertheless, a substantial proportion of cancers can be prevented through reducing known risk factors and improving access to vaccination, screening, early diagnosis, and effective treatment. [1][2]

Myth 1: “One food will cause cancer”

The facts

No individual food—whether noodles, eggs, tomatoes, palm oil, suya, garri, fish, or groundnuts—automatically causes cancer after occasional consumption. Cancer risk is influenced more by long-term dietary patterns, quantity and frequency of intake, body weight, alcohol use, tobacco exposure, physical inactivity, infections, and environmental hazards. [2][3]

A practical dietary approach is to eat more whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits; reduce frequent intake of highly processed foods; and maintain a healthy body weight. [4][5]

Myth 2: “Sugar feeds cancer, so avoiding sugar cures it”

The facts

All cells use glucose, including healthy cells and cancer cells. There is no evidence that avoiding sugar “starves” cancer or cures a tumour. Restrictive diets may instead worsen weight loss, micronutrient deficiency, and malnutrition in people undergoing cancer treatment. [3][4]

However, frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and highly energy-dense foods can encourage weight gain. Excess body weight is a recognised modifiable risk factor for several cancers; therefore, water and unsweetened drinks are preferable to regular sugary beverages. [2][5]

Myth 3: “Hot pineapple water kills cancer cells”

The facts

There is no reliable human evidence that hot pineapple water prevents cancer, destroys cancer cells, shrinks tumours, treats hypertension, clears toxins, or cures any cancer. Pineapple is a nutritious fruit, but it is not a cancer medicine.

Claims that hot pineapple water becomes “alkaline” and thereby kills cancer cells are biologically implausible. The body tightly regulates blood pH through the lungs and kidneys; foods and beverages do not meaningfully alter blood pH in a way that treats cancer. Cancer treatment should never be delayed or replaced with fruit, herbal mixtures, supplements, or forwarded social-media remedies.

Myth 4: “Alkaline diets or detox drinks cure cancer”

The facts

No credible clinical evidence shows that alkaline water, lemon water, smoothies, teas, juice cleanses, or “detox” drinks cure cancer. The liver, kidneys, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract normally process metabolic waste and many external substances.

A diet containing vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains is beneficial because it supports overall nutrition and healthy weight—not because it changes body pH or eliminates cancer cells. [3][4]

Myth 5: “Every grilled meat meal causes cancer”

The facts

Frequent intake of heavily charred meat may increase exposure to potentially harmful compounds generated during high-temperature cooking. The relevant issue is regular, cumulative exposure—not an occasional serving of suya, barbecue, roasted meat, or grilled fish. [3][6]

Risk can be reduced by avoiding burnt or blackened portions, limiting frequent intake of processed meat, varying protein sources with beans and fish, and increasing vegetables and fibre-containing foods. [4][6]

Myth 6: “Processed meat is as dangerous as smoking”

The facts

Processed meat is associated with colorectal cancer, and reducing frequent intake is prudent. However, it is misleading to say that eating processed meat carries the same level of personal cancer risk as smoking tobacco. Carcinogen classifications describe the certainty that an exposure can cause cancer, not that all classified exposures have the same magnitude of risk. [4][6]

Tobacco remains one of the most important preventable causes of cancer. Avoiding smoking and second-hand smoke should take priority in cancer prevention. [2][1]

Myth 7: “Mouldy food becomes safe after cooking”

The facts

Some moulds that contaminate food crops, particularly maize and groundnuts, can produce aflatoxins. Aflatoxin is a food contaminant recognised as a cancer-causing exposure and is strongly linked to liver cancer. [2]

Cooking, roasting, or removing only the visibly mouldy area may not reliably eliminate toxins already present in food. Avoid visibly mouldy, insect-damaged, stale-smelling, or poorly stored grains, nuts, and legumes; improve drying and storage practices; and purchase food from reliable sources where possible.

Myth 8: “All food preservatives, dyes, and additives cause cancer”

The facts

The word “chemical” does not mean “carcinogen (cancer-causer).” Foods naturally consist of chemicals, and permitted food additives are assessed for safety at defined levels. It is inaccurate to assume that every preservative, colouring agent, flavour enhancer, or packaged product causes cancer.

The real concern is illegal adulteration, poor manufacturing practice, unsafe storage, counterfeit products, and excessive long-term consumption of unhealthy dietary patterns. Suspicion of food adulteration should be reported to relevant food-safety and regulatory authorities rather than circulated as an unverified allegation.

Myth 9: “Carbide-ripened fruit always causes cancer”

The facts

Calcium carbide is not an approved food-ripening method and should not be used because of potential toxic impurities and unsafe food-handling practices. However, it is inaccurate to claim that every fruit suspected of artificial ripening will cause cancer.

Consumers should wash produce thoroughly, buy from reputable sellers where possible, choose seasonal fruits, and support effective food-safety inspection and enforcement. Food safety should be based on testing and regulation, not fear or speculation.

Myth 10: “Detergent in boiled eggs is a proven cause of cancer”

The facts

Food should never be cooked with detergent or other non-food chemicals. However, viral claims that detergent routinely passes through eggshells during boiling and causes cancer have not been supported by credible toxicological or epidemiological evidence.

Eggshells are porous, but porosity alone does not establish a clinically meaningful detergent dose inside a cooked egg or prove a cancer outcome. A suspected unsafe vendor should be reported for inspection rather than used as the basis for a broad, unverified cancer claim.

Myth 11: “Microwaved food causes cancer”

The facts

Microwave ovens use non-ionising radiation to heat food; they do not make food radioactive. There is no evidence that food heated in a properly functioning microwave becomes carcinogenic because it was microwaved.

Use microwave-safe containers, avoid heating food in damaged or unsuitable plastics, and replace appliances with damaged doors or seals. These are sensible food-safety precautions, not evidence that microwave cooking causes cancer.

Myth 12: “Plastic containers always cause cancer”

The facts

Not all plastic food containers pose the same risk. The more relevant concern is heating food in containers not designed for high temperatures, especially visibly damaged, warped, or non-food-grade plastics.

Use glass, ceramic, stainless steel, or labelled microwave-safe containers for hot foods where feasible. Avoid pouring very hot food or drinks into single-use plastic packaging and do not reuse damaged containers for food storage.

Myth 13: “Antiperspirants and deodorants cause breast cancer”

The facts

There is no convincing evidence that antiperspirants or deodorants cause breast cancer. Claims that underarm products block “toxins” or that aluminium in antiperspirants causes breast cancer are not supported by established cancer-prevention evidence.

Breast-cancer risk is more meaningfully influenced by age, family history, reproductive factors, alcohol, obesity after menopause, physical activity, and some hormonal exposures. Women should be encouraged to know breast symptoms and seek prompt clinical assessment for concerning changes.

Myth 14: “Mobile phones and Wi-Fi definitely cause cancer”

The facts

Current scientific evidence has not established that ordinary mobile-phone or Wi-Fi use causes cancer. Nonetheless, people who wish to reduce personal radiofrequency exposure can use hands-free options, speaker mode, or text messaging without fear-based messaging.

Established carcinogenic exposures—including tobacco smoke, alcohol, ultraviolet radiation, certain infections, air pollution, and occupational carcinogens—deserve more urgent attention. [2][1]

Myth 15: “Only smokers develop tobacco-related cancer”

The facts

Second-hand smoke is harmful and contributes to cancer risk. People who do not smoke can be exposed at home, in vehicles, at work, and in public places. Tobacco prevention must therefore protect both smokers and non-smokers. [2]

Stopping tobacco use at any age is beneficial. Smoke-free homes, schools, hospitals, workplaces, and public spaces are important public-health measures.

Myth 16: “Generator fumes only cause headache and cough”

The facts

Generator exhaust can worsen respiratory symptoms and contributes to air pollution. Diesel exhaust is a recognised carcinogenic hazard, especially in people with substantial and prolonged occupational or environmental exposure. [2][1]

Generators should be placed outdoors and far from doors, windows, vents, and sleeping areas. They must never be operated indoors or in enclosed spaces because carbon-monoxide poisoning can be rapidly fatal.

Myth 17: “Cancer caused by HPV or hepatitis is proof of immoral behaviour”

The facts

Cancer-related infections are medical conditions, not moral failings. Hepatitis B can be acquired during childbirth, in early childhood, through unsafe injections or blood exposure, and through sex. HPV is common and can be transmitted through intimate skin-to-skin contact. [2]

Prevention should focus on hepatitis B vaccination, HPV vaccination, safe injection and transfusion practices, safer sex, testing, treatment, cervical screening, and compassionate clinical care. Stigma reduces uptake of prevention and delays care.

Myth 18: “A condom gives complete protection from HPV”

The facts

Condoms substantially reduce the transmission of many sexually transmitted infections and should be encouraged. However, they do not provide complete protection against HPV because the virus can be transmitted through contact with infected skin not covered by the condom.

HPV vaccination and cervical screening remain essential components of cervical-cancer prevention, alongside safer sexual practices. [2]

Myth 19: “Peptic ulcer after age 40 means cancer”

The facts

Peptic ulcer disease is commonly associated with Helicobacter pylori infection or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use. It is not synonymous with cancer, and age alone cannot diagnose malignancy.

Persistent dyspepsia or ulcer symptoms deserve evaluation, particularly when there is gastrointestinal bleeding, vomiting, progressive swallowing difficulty, iron-deficiency anaemia, unexplained weight loss, or early satiety. H. pylori is a recognised cancer-causing infection and should be appropriately diagnosed and treated. [2]

Myth 20: “There is a safe amount of alcohol for cancer prevention”

The facts

Alcohol increases the risk of several cancers. For cancer prevention, the lower the consumption, the lower the risk; avoiding alcohol is preferable. [4][5]

This does not mean that a person who drinks alcohol will certainly develop cancer. It means that alcohol-related cancer risk rises with consumption, making reduction or abstinence an important preventive choice.

Myth 21: “Vitamin supplements prevent cancer”

The facts

Vitamin and antioxidant supplements are not proven cancer-prevention treatments for the general population. High-dose supplements may be harmful in some circumstances and may interact with prescribed drugs or cancer therapy. [4][5]

Nutritional needs should generally be met through a diverse diet. Supplements should be used for a diagnosed deficiency, a specific physiological need, or a clinician-supported indication.

Myth 22: “Sun exposure is harmless because sunlight provides vitamin D”

The facts

Sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D, but excessive ultraviolet exposure increases skin-cancer risk. Avoiding intense midday sun, seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen appropriately can reduce harm. [2]

Vitamin D needs can be assessed clinically when there is concern about deficiency; intentional sunburn is never a safe health strategy.

Myth 23: “A healthy lifestyle guarantees protection from cancer”

The facts

Healthy living lowers risk but does not eliminate it. People who do not smoke, eat well, exercise, and avoid alcohol may still develop cancer because ageing, genetics, infections, random cellular mutations, and unavoidable exposures also contribute. [2][1]

Cancer prevention should therefore be combined with early detection. Seek medical evaluation for persistent or unexplained symptoms, accept recommended vaccination, and participate in appropriate screening programmes when available.

Practical Cancer-Prevention Priorities

The most reliable everyday actions are to avoid tobacco and second-hand smoke; reduce or avoid alcohol; maintain a healthy weight; stay physically active; eat mostly whole grains, beans, vegetables, and fruits; limit processed meat and frequent highly charred meat; and avoid dependence on supplements or unproven “detox” products. [3][5]

Vaccination against hepatitis B and HPV, safer health-care practices, safe sex, protection from excessive ultraviolet radiation, reduced exposure to air pollution, and strong food-safety regulation are also essential. These evidence-based measures offer far greater protection than viral messages that blame a single food or advertise an unproven cancer cure. [2][1]
